Character Profile

As the class turns to the early pages of the Acolyte's handbook, the Chronicler rolls up her sleeves and brandishes a fresh piece of whiterock. The class finds their pages and settles down. Aleywn begins.

"The purpose of the CHARACTER PROFILE is to achieve two main goals. The first goal is to set a certain boundary for yourself. The profile will provide you with the means of deciding all the main aspects of your character, everything from your name to the clothes you wear. The second, and more important goal, is to provide other writers in the guild with a way of learning about your character for their use in their stories.

For example, you get asked by me, Alewyn Arransen, if I could use your character in one of my stories. You agree and I begin writing the story. It comes to the part where I need to write about you and you suddenly appear to be offline. I then simply go to the Chamber of Heroes, look up your character profile, and draw the information I need from the thread."

She takes a breath and allows her students to soak in the invaluable information she has just shared.

"Your Character Profile sheet should also include a stat chart of your character's abilities. This is not mandatory but would be very useful to those who would be trying to measure your, let us say, strength for example. The chart is based on a scale of 1 to 100, 1 being the weakest and 100 being the strongest; 50 being the human average for all statistics. The following characteristics are to be mentioned upon filling out the chart."

STR (strength): How much physical strength do you possess?

PRE (Presence): How strong is your presence around other people?

Should you need additional idea for character development, consider the following questions as well.

Does your character like his or her name? Why? Why not?

  • If your character changed their name, ask the same questions for the new name.
  • Did your character have a nickname or pet name as a child?
  • Employment / Career

  • What influenced your character's career choices?
  • What are your character's professional aims?
  • Values and preferences What makes your character happy? Sad? Angry? Satisfied? Embarrassed?

  • What is his or her most secret personal wish or dream?
  • His or her greatest fear? Is there a reason? Describe.
  • His or her greatest failure?
  • Darkest secret?
  • "With these as your guidelines, you should be able to produce a well-thought out 'game plan' for your character. Remember, once you create your profile, you should stay within the guidelines that you have set for yourself. For example, if you say that your character possesses above average human strength, then you should not be lifting mountains in your stories.

All Character Profiles are to be posted in the Chamber of Heroes in the Temple of Kala for the viewing of the rest of our writers."
