Path of Atonement

“What are your orders my My Lord?” the cloaked figure asks the other figure leaning against a tree.. It’s a cold windless night on the outskirts of the Draconian Empire. An air of restlessness can be felt as the small group of elves set up camp for the night. It has been a long trip for them, and for one in particular, the flood of memories weighs even heavier on him, although he will never show it.

“We will camp here for the night my friend. We have traveled harder than I intended and we must all be awake and ready for tomorrow. We will be safe here, do not attack if anyone comes near the camp, and send them to me directly. By now I think a group of black cloaked riders has drawn the empires attention, they will come.”

The shorter figure nods solemnly thinking on his next words, knowing the answer but still wanting to ask. “My Lord….”

The figure leaning against the tree straightens up, raising his hand. The figure now stands much taller than anyone that’s in the group. He opens his eyes, the dark crimson glowing in the cool night. “No need for titles, its Talyn my friend. You know after tonight you must, as well as the others, refrain from using my title in these borders. I’m not about to upset the already fragile balance that is already here in these lands. Here I am less than a knight, I am but a man of Kala, guided by her words.”

The smaller elf nods, allowing Talyn to pass by him as he looks towards Dragonspire. “I do have to ask though….do you think it is wise to return to Draconia? I mean, given what has happened in the past do you not think they would simply kill you instead of let you roam free? They know what you are capable of, and even more so what you have done. Abandoning them for a fools errand in their opinion? You disappeared without a trace after…what happened”

Talyn looks back at the elf. “you can say it…after both my wife and daughter were killed, their bodies left to rot. I hold no emotions for those events.”

The elf sighs, trying to make sense of it, not understanding how Talyn can be so blunt about it. A few seconds pass, and the elf walks up towards Talyn as he looks at the mountains of Dragonspire.

Talyn waits a few seconds, shrugging indifferently. “Adelry, you were there the night I swore my oath to the spirits of the Selune, the night I became what I am now. You know I must return and follow what Kala has shown me. I gave you and the others the choice to follow your own path. The path I follow is mine alone, not yours or the others.”

Adelry nods, a smile creeping onto his lips. “And before you even asked that you knew our answer Talyn. We follow you into death itself if that is what it takes to follow your path. Once you are inside the borders of Draconia, we will part ways and travel south and enter your home in Enchantica and make it ready for your arrival. Do you know if any of your family that is still in Draconia?”

Talyn shrugs again, his crimson eyes flaring for just a second, the only emotion he has shown in awhile. “I do not know, when I left I was all but dead to them. If they are here they will return, I give them the choice I gave you. Follow me or follow your own path.”

Adelry nods again. “Not a problem my lord, do your orders still stand once we secure the manor?”

“Yes, kill anyone that sets foot on the property without warning. I am not making the same mistake twice” Adelry nods, remembering the stories of what happened to Talyn’s wife and daughter. “Hit to kill, no warning shots. If there is fallout from what happens I will deal with it. There should be no reason for anyone to be just casually walking on my land anyways, Draconian or otherwise.

“Yes Talyn, I understand perfectly, just wanted to make sure you were still firm on your orders…you have been…detached from things as of late.”

Talyn nods, lifting his head to the stars “It’s not that I’m detached Adelry…I’m more at peace with the choices I have made for myself and others. Things happen for a reason and there is always balance to what happens. I’ve become less emotional over the choices simply because they will happen regardless of how I think or feel about them.”

With that said Talyn bows slightly, putting his helm back on and quickly walking towards his tent, leaving the other elf to his thoughts.

“Kala bless us…I wish I knew what was in that elf’s head” With a quick smirk Adelry walks towards his own tent.

**
Why do you not grieve for the lost souls of your past?....that is not the way

Why do you fight for a dead race?....they do not support you

Why do you still follow this path?...it will lead to your death

Talyn opens his eyes slowly, noting that only about an hour has passed. Sighing to himself he sits up and opens his eyes. Why do those words haunt him so? He wonders to himself as he stands up, stretching his back. Pacing his tent slowly he mulls over the words and why they have been haunting him so much as of late.

“I do not grieve because they died for a reason, even if it is unknown to me” he whispers to himself softly, tears falling slowly down his face. He attempts to keep his emotions in check, but in these quiet moments it seems too much for the young Selune elf. He gently grabs the hilt of his sword Crylis and pulls it free from the scabbard. Making the unmistakable sound as it is pulled he spins the blade quickly in an arc, concentrating on his thoughts as he goes through his sword forms.

“I fight not for a dead race, but for my races future. I am alive therefore the Selune are not forgotten. Every spirit lives through me as well as through my family.” He whispers the words as his other hand passes over the blade, splitting Crylis into two identical blades. The glyphs over the blades glowing a deep red as he spins both blades.

“I follow this path because it is the will of Kala herself. This is the path of my atonement” With that said he combines both blades into one and thrusts the blade into the ground. Talyn’s breathing slows and he closes his eyes, bowing his head slightly.

“Kala light my path no matter the darkness, no matter the pain it will cause me or others. You are the light I follow in the darkness, you are the power that never fails. In my life I serve, in my death you will be remembered.” With that said, Talyn lowers himself to the ground, crossing his legs. He places his forehead on the hilt of Crylis and drifts off to sleep.
